What Is Mixed Media Collage? (And why it's so fun for all ages)

Hi friend!
If you’ve ever found yourself saving a beautiful piece of wrapping paper, flipping through old magazines for inspiration, or just wanting to make something without all the rules—then you’re going to love mixed media collage.
So... what is mixed media collage?
In the simplest terms, mixed media collage is the art of layering different materials—like paper, paint, and found objects—onto a surface to create something new and beautiful.
It’s part painting, part cutting and pasting, and all about creativity. The best part? There’s no right or wrong way to do it!
You can tear up an old book page, splash a little paint, add a few painted papers, doodle some designs, and voilà—you’ve created a unique little masterpiece.

What kinds of materials can you use?
The beauty of mixed media is that almost anything can become part of your art! Here are some of my favorites:
Painted or printed paper
Magazine clippings
Tissue paper, napkins, or scrapbook paper
Old book pages
Acrylic paints and crayons
Stamps, stencils, and gel pens
Bits of fabric or ribbon
Leaves, feathers, or even a teabag tag!
You don’t need to go out and buy expensive supplies. Start with what you have—and let your imagination guide the rest.

Why I love it (and why you might too)
Mixed media collage is playful, forgiving, and so much fun. It’s perfect for:
People who want to make art but don’t know where to begin
Creative kids and curious grown-ups
Anyone who loves color, texture, and freedom
Moments when you just need a little joy
For me, collage is a happy escape. It’s a chance to slow down, get a little messy, and turn scraps into something beautiful. You don’t have to be a trained artist—you just have to show up and try.
